SIA Flashback – False Starts and Second Guesses

SIA Flashback - False Starts and Second Guesses

As far as automobile designers go, Eugene Bordinat isn’t discussed today in the same reverent tones as Harley Earl or Bill Mitchell (or even his predecessor, Elwood Engel). However, he presided over a challenging and rapidly changing era of design at Ford, an era that Jan Norbye captured in this article from SIA #54, December 1979.

Stroppe Baja Bronco

Ford’s first sport-utility vehicle got a lot of exposure thanks to Bill Stroppe’s racing efforts in the Ford Bronco in the late 1960s. To commemorate the success, Ford in 1971 began offering the Baja Bronco, a “limited production duplicate” of Stroppe’s racing Broncos. Ford painted the Baja Broncos Metallic Blue, Wimbledon White and Poppy Red, then shipped them to Stroppe himself for the remainder of the conversion, which included fender flares, a padded rollbar and oversize tires. After 30 years, Ford and Navistar still friends, but going to see other people

1979; Kramer vs. Kramer was the top grossing film, Rod the Bod was riding "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" up the charts, and the late, great Fox-body Mustang was brand new. In that heady last year of the 1970s, Ford and Navistar gazed deeply into each other's corporate eyes and dreamily vowed "I do." The relationship had been one of give and take - Navistar giving engines (most recently diesel ones for Ford's heavy-duty pickups), Ford taking the motors and in turn giving cash to its supplier - until things turned contentious around the current engine contract. The differences have become too much to bear, though the companies are being far more civil now than in the past. Ford and Navistar have reportedly settled all lawsuits flying back and forth between them, and the current engine supply contract will end amicably on December 31, 2009. Ford will also slide a palimony check to Navistar. It's a different story in South America, where Ford and Navistar are going to keep it together, and the companies say they'll continue to collaborate in other areas, but this particular union is kaput.

Detroit 2009: Eyes on Design Awards for best concept, best production vehicle

Each year, the Detroit Auto Show plays host to the Eyes on Design Awards, where a group of judges descend into the bowels of Cobo Hall to pick their favorite vehicles from the show. The nominees are predictably divided into two categories: Design Excellence for a Concept Vehicle and Design Excellence for a Production Vehicle.

This year's ceremony was MC'd by our very own John McElroy from Autoline Detroit, with judging duties handled by BMW design head Chris Bangle, Harley-Davidson chief styling officer Willy G. Davidson, and transportation design chair at the College for Creative Studies Larry Erickson. The two winners for production vehicle were the Audi R8 5.2 FSI and the 2010 BMW Z4, while Audi Sportback and Cadillac Converj took home the best concept awards. Check out all four vehicles in the galleries below and let the judges know your own picks in the comments.

Detroit 2009: Best automaker cutaway displays

Cutaway displays have been a staple of auto shows for many years, but we're noticing that more and more automakers are devoting money and floor space to cutaway displays. Aside from being cool to look at, cutaways are an increasingly valuable tool for explaining today's advanced technologies -- particularly when it comes to the complex systems found in alternative-fuel vehicles. Check out the gallery below to see how different automakers are taking the hinges off for the viewing public at the Detroit Auto Show.
